SEBS-NA stands for “Society of Ex-Budhanilkantha Students – North America.” Formed in July 2000, a non-profit organization, we are the alumni and friends of Budhanilkantha School, Kathmandu, Nepal, located in various parts of North America. IRS recognizes us, under section 501(c)(3) code, as a Tax Exempt organization. We are volunteer-based organization dedicated to: 1) providing assistance to our members in North America, 2) conducting social service programs in Nepal and North America, 3) helping Budhanilkantha School to meet its educational objectives and 4) being an organization dedicated to better coordination and leadership among various Nepal-related associations in North America.
The organization is governed by the elected Executive Committee (excomm), its advisors. The excomm members meet every month to constantly update the status of various programs and policy and run the day-to-day business of the association. We also have an Annual Reunion where our members from across North America come together for networking, renewal of friendship and participate in the discussion about the organization’s future goals and mission. In addition to passing important amendments to our constitution, various cultural, social and educational programs are also organized at the reunion.
Aim
Our following Preamble from our Articles of Association summarizes our aim:
As a student we have a special relationship with our Alma Matter that represents a lifetime commitment in the fulfillment of our dreams and aspirations. We were the focus of her goals and objectives. As an alumnus, we will represent the result of her mission and the embodiment of her spirit in the world. What she is, we are; what she becomes, we become. Because we are the emerging essence of our institution, we will strive to enhance this special relationship between student, alumni and others so that the heritage of our Alma Mater will always be a part of our life – for the present as we follow our dreams and for the future as we strive to seek truth. It is through this friendship that we have derived from our school, we henceforth are striving for unity among fellow brothers and sisters of our Alma Matter Budhanilkantha School. We aim to foster and disseminate our proud heritage for the ultimate benefit of society and mankind.
Programs
SEBS North America’s Education Project
Realizing the far-reaching impact that access to a library can have on children, SEBS North America has been establishing e-libraries in various public and community schools in Nepal. Since 2019, SEBS North America has partnered with Open Learning Exchange (OLE), a registered non-profit in Nepal to establish e-libraries in eight different public schools in Nepal. The e-library project is an initiative to establish online libraries in those schools of Nepal where there is limited to no internet connection. Accessibility to the library content, which includes resources from course books to various educational videos, is provided by helping the schools set up devices and servers which host those content. In 2022-23, we established e-library in Pyang Secondary School (Maijogmai Gaupalika-6, Illam).
Schools supported since 2019: Raluka Secondary School & Dupcheshwor Sec. School (Nuwakot), Sharada Sec. School (Bhojpur), Rastriya Sec. School (Nawalaparasi), Laxmi Sec. School (Chitwan), Sitaladevi Sec. School (Sindhupalchowk, in coordination with Teach for Nepal), Shree Janakalya Sec. School (Makwanpur), Pyang Secondary School (Illam),
Other Community-Based Educational Initiatives
SEBS North America donated books and stationery materials to the children of Adarsha Griha. It’s a safe house for children in Lankhu, Chitwan (picture on the left)
SEBS North America provided scholarship to two students of Bhagwati Secondary School in Aadarsh Rural Municipality 6, Talara, Doti.
SEBS-NA is always looking forward to new challenges and gives a helping hand at various programs that meet our goal.
